Oh my gosh I am so fascinated by these lunch box photos! Mom blogger Kate from Katesurfs posted this Australian piece about what’s in kids’ lunch boxes.
Some quick take-aways: 1) Lunches were overwhelmingly comprised of pre-packaged food (frequently a less healthy option). 2) Lunches were very similar in both neighborhoods. 3) Many of the packed lunches from the low-income neighborhood were more costly than those from the high-income neighborhood.
They had a nutritionist comment on the findings, who urged parents to pack up more dinner leftovers for lunch. But if you think about it, this assumes that all these families are sitting down to a home cooked dinner every night – is that too big of an assumption? Personally, the photos left me wondering whether a major barrier in providing nutritious lunches for kids is the stress of living rushed and hurried lives/ being overwhelmed by life and all we need to get done on weeknights and weekday mornings…
What do you think?
